This Victoria Day weekend, we headed up north with my husband’s family for a much-needed break from the usual day-to-day. A change of pace, wide-open skies, and time with people we love—it was the reset we didn’t even realize we needed.
Most of our days were spent outdoors, fishing with the kids, soaking up the fresh air, and just letting the hours unfold slowly. There’s something so grounding about being near the water—no deadlines, no noise, just ripples, laughter, and the occasional splash from a fish on the line.
One of the sweetest moments of the weekend came unexpectedly. Our son made fast friends with a group of kids staying at the cottages and was off playing, totally in his element. That opened up a rare window of alone time with our teenage daughter—and we took it. We headed out on the boat, just the three of us. The water was rough, but we made the most of it. We laughed, held on tight, and had real conversations we don’t always have the time or space for at home. It wasn’t calm water, but it was calm time—and I’ll treasure that more than anything.
Evenings were filled with relaxed family dinners, card games, and fires under the stars. We even managed to catch the Toronto Maple Leafs game… though we’re not going to talk about the outcome of that.
It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t perfectly peaceful. But it was exactly what we needed.
What about you?
What did your long weekend look like? Did you head out of town or stay close to home and catch up on things around the house? Do you have a go-to place you love to visit on long weekends—a family cottage, a favorite trail, or maybe just your own backyard?
I’d love to hear where you find your calm.
Drop it in the comments or send me a message—let’s trade stories. 💛
